Transparency is a tool for special, typical tasks performed on transparent PNGs, especially in the context of the WWW.

Transparency currently supports some typical, specialised operations you can easily do with The Gimp or similar applications, but which are likely to be needed in scripts, so this is a command line tool.

Ive implemented typical things I often need that ImageMagicks do not provide.

Currently, two major algorithms are available, along with a few minor ones:

Convert White to Transparency

I needed this for scripted generation of transparent images showing rendered text. The rendered text usually comes out black-on-white, which this tool converts to black-on-transparent.

Perfectly Convert PNG to GIF

PNG features a full-fledged alpha channel, making half-transparent images easy to handle. However, only few Web browsers support it completely, so I wanted GIF images on my web site, but PNG images as my working copy.

This application prepares PNGs for conversion to GIF by making all pixels either opaque or fully transparent. When you provide a background colour, the resulting GIF looks just as smoothly embedded as the original PNG. This works particularly well for antialiased pictures or text.

Combination

You will often want to combine the two steps above and might want to additionally scale the image. You can do this in one step with Transparency.

Whats New in This Release:

· gcc 4.0 compilation was still broken for some people; this version should fix that.

KDesktop transparency support is a KDE patch that adds support for real transparency to kdesktop. It adds two new composite manager related features. To activate the features kdesktop has to be started with the "--bg-transparency" option.

The first one allows you to change the opacity of the background image. This works currently with the beryl transparent cube and will also work with compiz once the transparent cube gets applied. To activate the feature add the following to your kdesktoprc:

BackgroundOpacity=90 (0 = fully transparent / 100 = opaque)

The second feature allows compiz (and later maybe other composite managers) to tell kdesktop not to paint the background image ("_COMPIZ_WALLPAPER_SUPPORTED" x atom). In this case compiz is able to paint a viewport dependent background or to make it even animated. This feature looks for changes to the x atom, so that kdesktop will automatically switch back to normal background if kwin gets started or compiz stops to render the wallpaper.

This patch is against the current kde3 svn.

X Transparency Daemon provides a daemon which uses the X.org X11 server to set the transparency of user-defined applications to user-defined values.

Installation

Install from package or source and add the following lines

xcompmgr -c -F &
transd &

to your $HOME/.xinitrc

Configuration

* System-wide configuration file: /etc/transd/transd.conf
* User-based configuration file: $HOME/.transd/transd.conf

FadingTaskbar will allow users to easily change the transparency of the taskbar

Here are some key features of "FadingTaskbar":

· Individual transparency settings for when the mouse is inside and outside the taskbar.
· Fade in, fade out.
· Makes the taskbar solid when maximized windows exist.
· Remembers the original transparency.

Ghost will create a smoked-glass display by allowing you to change brightness to transparency.

Transparent TaskBar is a free tool that lets you to easily adjust the transparency of your taskbar. Transparent TaskBar can even be set to remember your transparency settings, and reapply them automatically every time you startup your PC.

Actual Transparent Windows lets you apply transparency effect to any window in Windows 2000/XP.
The transparency effect looks very impressive and may be useful with such objects as Windows Taskbar, WinAmp, drop-down menus and other windows.

The transparent Taskbar doesnt hide any part of your desktop wallpaper.
The transparent WinAmp looks stylish and impressive.
The transparent drop-down menu does not obscure the main program window.

Actual Transparent Windows lets you set individual transparency rate for each window.
You can change transparency from 0% (fully transparent) to 100% (solid) to achieve the desired effect.

Actual Transparent Windows saves all your settings so that you need to set the transparency only once for each window.

This program is an exercise on bitmap transparency effects, that is NOT using Windows 2K/XP alpha-channel transparency. This means that you can experience wonderful transparency effects on any Windows platform (98/Me/NT/2K/XP).

Chaos Crystal is a very small tool for Windows that will allow setting transparency for any open application. Drag the target to the program window you would like to set to be transparent. The transparency can be adjusted with the slider.

The value on the slider indicates how transparent the window is: 0 for total transparency, 255 for complete opacity. Have fun with this handy utility. Chaos Crystal can run from any location including removable devices such flash memory.

Give transparency to almost every visible window of your running applications, or make your taskbar transparent at a desirable level.

TransApps is a systray application with two features:
- The Transparent Applications feature, from were you can make any visible running applications window transparent, selecting from a panel of transparency level buttons.
- The Transparent Taskbar feature, from were you can make your taskbar transparent, selecting also a transparency level.
