Free open-source disk encryption for Windows XP/2000/2003. TrueCrypt is a software that allows you to encrypt disks.

TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention.

No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct
password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g.., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc).

Files can be copied to and from a mounted TrueCrypt volume just like they are copied to/from any normal disk (for example, by simple drag-and-drop operations).

Files are automatically being decrypted on-the-fly (in memory/RAM) while they are being read or copied from an encrypted TrueCrypt volume. Similarly, files that are being written or copied to the TrueCrypt volume are automatically being encrypted on-the-fly (right before they are written to the disk) in RAM.

Note that this does not mean that the whole file that is to be encrypted / decrypted must be stored in RAM before it can be encrypted / decrypted. The are no extra memory (RAM) requirements for TrueCrypt. For an illustration of how this is accomplished, see the following paragraph.

Lets suppose that there is an .avi video file stored on a TrueCrypt volume (therefore, the video file is entirely encrypted). The user provides the correct password (and/or keyfile) and mounts (opens) the TrueCrypt volume. When the user double clicks the icon of the video file, the operating system launches the application associated with the file type - typically a media player.

This program is the real deal. Unlike other folder locking applications that can be circumvented by booting in safe mode or booting from a cd (or even worse, by terminating the process in Task Manager), the only way to access the data is to mount it using TrueCrypt. The best thing about TrueCrypt is that it is extremely fast.

TCExplorer description
TCExplorer is a portable software to import, export, delete, and rename files in TrueCrypt containers TCExplorer is a portable software to import, export, delete, and rename files in TrueCrypt containers. TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device).

TCExplorer is small, simple and does not require any installation.

Here are some key features of "TCExplorer":

Stay on top: TCExplorer may stay on top of other windows.
Set current dir as temp dir: Set current directory as temporary system directory to
store exported directories and files. By default, the system defined temp directory will be used. However if you do not wish to use the system defined temp directory, you can set this option to make TCExplorer use the application directory (which will usually be on a thumbdrive) as the temporary directory.
View file size: View size of files stored in TrueCrypt containers.
Save window position: Save last window position and size on closing and revert on next launch.
Delete temp dir: Delete directories/files in temporary directory after exporting is finished. If unchecked, directories/files in temporary directory will not be deleted after exporting is finished so that users can use their own file shredder software to securely delete the temporary directories/files.
Secure delete temp files: Securely delete directories/files in temporary directory after exporting is finished by overwriting the files with null characters and then renaming them to ~ before deleting them. Directories are also renamed to ~ before deletion.

Network Drive Manager (NDM) is a utility for managing network drives, which brings added value to home users, small business users and large enterprise users that access network drives in a (wireless) network.

During Windows logon NDM ensures that all network drives under its control get connected and activated, where after they are periodically reconnected to prevent deactivation.

In case network resources are not (yet) available or if the connection with a network resource is temporarily lost (e.g. when resuming a notebook from standby or if a wireless network connection was interrupted), NDM actively attempts to reconnect the network drives.

Optionally it can run programs, open documents or mount TrueCrypt volumes after a network drive has been successfully connected.

A network drive managing application with enhanced reconnection and keep-alive mechanism

Network Drive Manager brings added value to users that access network drives in a computer network, ranging from small home networks to large corporate networks.

Network Drive Manager is a dedicated Windows software for managing network drives. During Windows logon it will reconnect the network drives that were configured using NDM, where after theyre kept alive to prevent deactivation.

In case NDM is started before any network connection is available (this is usually the case when Windows on a computer) a reconnect mechanism with a short interval is used until all network drives are connected where after reconnect mechanism with a longer interval is put in place.

Optionally it can launch applications or documents when all network drives have been successfully connected.

Windows does not properly reconnect network drives after logon that have been configured using Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer with the "Reconnect at logon" feature checked. Although theyre visible in Windows Explorer, they are usually not activated.

This causes problems when e.g. a network drive is used as a central location to store documents and/or settings. Applications that use these documents and/or settings stored on the network drive will complain or even fail to start because the network location is not accessible.

Even if the network drive would have been reconnected properly, the next problem is that Windows will deactivate the network drive (i.e. make it inaccessible) if it is not accessed for a while. This can result in complaining applications because theyre unable to write their data to disk, and it can even result in data loss if applications do not anticipate on these possible failures.

Features of "Network Drive Manager":

Ensures all network drives that are under control of NDM get connected and activated.
Network drives are kept alive to prevent deactivation.
Built-in reconnect mechanism in case network drives or network resources are not (yet) available.
Support for import existing network drives.
Ability to run programs or to documents when a network drive has been successfully connected.
TrueCrypt integration: automatically mount TrueCrypt volumes when a network drive has been successfully connected.
Compact status information of the managed network drives in the system tray and comprehensive status information in the main screen.
Support for connecting network drives using a different user name.
Alert mechanism when the connection with a network drive is lost and when it is restored.
Fully customizable.
Uses few computer resources such as memory and hard disk space.
Product lifetime free upgrade policy for registered users!

Whats wrong with mapping network drives in Windows?

Windows does not properly reconnect network drives after logon that have been configured using Map Network Drive in Windows Explorer with the "Reconnect at logon" feature checked. Although theyre visible in Windows Explorer, they are usually not activated.
This causes problems when e.g. a network drive is used as a central location to store documents and/or settings. Applications that use these centrally stored files will complain or even fail to start because the network location is not accessible.
Even if the network drive would have been reconnected properly, the other problem is that Windows deactivates network drives (i.e. make it inaccessible) if they?re not accessed for a while. This again results in complaining applications since theyre not able to flush their data to disk, and sometimes it even ends up in data loss for those applications that don?t anticipate on these possible failures.
