CTLREG 1
CTLREG supplies you with a convenient and smart tool which can register and unregister OLE Controls. Before you can use an OLE Control, you must register it with the system. more>>
CTLREG 1 supplies you with a convenient and smart tool which can register and unregister OLE Controls. Before you can use an OLE Control, you must register it with the system. Registering an OLE Control places information about the control in the system registry. Once the control has been registered, applications and development environments can search the registry to determine which controls have been installed. Unlike a Visual Basic custom control (VBX), an OLE Control does not need to be registered by each application that uses it. Once the control has been registered with the system, any application can find it.
To register a control, choose the Register command from the Controls menu. This command brings up a dialog box that shows all of the files in the current directory that have the .OCX extension. You can also choose to view files with a .DLL extension. To unregister a control, choose the Unregister command from the Controls menu.

is intended to track changes made to the system by setup programs more>>
Look@Win is a free utility that was designed for tracking changes made to the system by setup programs. If you perform the installation of a program, you wont know if the setup will copy some files(i.e. DLL, VBX ) to your Windows (Tm) or Windowssystem directory. The amount of space required by Windows directories will enlarge, and if a specific uninstall program is not provided, you wont know what files could be safely deleted from Windows.
Running Look@win 3.53, after a program installation setup, will compare the actual status of Windows system with the recorded previous one, detecting changes. Inizialization files and Registry file control provides a sort of anti-virus function, too: if any difference will be detected, the new lines in .ini files or Windows Registry will be displayed, thus alerting for changes made by viral programs in order perform malicious actions at system startup.
Moreover detection of size changes of executable files in Windows directories adds possibilities of early discovering a viral attack to your system.
WhatFormat 1.4a
A file analyser that looks at these bytes for signatures (magic numbers) and makes a guess of the format this file may have. more>>
format is used. Sometimes the same extension is used for different formats, one extension can be used for different versions or often a file simply has a wrong extension.
The first bytes of a file may contain information of what format is used. WhatFormat is a file analyser that looks at these bytes for signatures (magic numbers) and makes a guess of the format this file may have.
WhatFormat is also easy to use and it requires only 50 kb of space.
Here are some usefull things that you can do with WhatFormat:
- It can be seen as a little util that may help you if you received a file from the Internet or wherever and you dont know what it is. By looking at magic numbers in the first bytes and at the filename extension, WhatFormat may tell something about this file.
New in version 1.4 is that it also suggests some possible viewers or converters.
- If WhatFormat recognizes the header of a file it often suggests some extensions this file may have. If you have problems opening this file with an application that should know this format, you can rename it with one of the other suggested extensions and try it again. Ive tried to put the most commonly used extensions at the front. Of course its (mostly) not a very smart idea to rename binaries (e.g. com, exe, bin, dll, vbx, etc.).
- Check if the header description matches the extension description. If it doesnt, this may explain why this file wont open in your favourite app. In such a case mostly the header description is right, so renaming this file to a right extension would be the right thing to do.
- Check version numbers (if shown). E.g. if WhatFormat shows the Version needed for a ZIP file as 2.xx and the version of Pkunzip you use is 1.xx, theres a very good change it cant be extracted. In that case you should update Pkunzip.
- It may be interesing to use WhatFormat to try to examine these *.bak files or these *.chk or *._dd files made by respectively Chkdsk and Norton Disk Doctor.
