The base component of VTE implements a Wide Area Distribution CRC32 Database and a BHO database that currently hosts 344611 unique signatures.
While using the CRC32 method is by no means the most accurate way to detect malware, you will find that most malware (worms, virus, trojans, etc) are still detected when you scan for them.
In addition to having user defined heuristics scanning (UDHS), and plug-in support (you still have to edit the paths manually using tweak.exe), the disinfection rates included with the plugins, along with their database implementations dramatically increase the chances of catching malware. When scanning with the heuristics, you will find that occasionally a false positive is triggered.
While false positives can be a small nuisance, it is much better than having a false negative, running said program, and suddenly having an unstable system with no idea what caused the problem.
The base component of VTE does not include disinfection. The reason for this is one of convenience: I simply dont have the time and/or resources to write 300000+ disinfection routines from scratch. To support disinfection techniques, it is recommended that you use an additional scanner with VTEs Plugin Support methods. VTEs base engine, which implements handle manipulation as opposed to thread manipulation is extremely processor intensive when, but ends up being a lot faster.<<less

W32/Kriz is a Windows file virus that will infect PE files under Microsoft Win9x and WinNT 4.0 platforms. This virus will wake up or get activated on 25th of December [Xmas day] and it will damage the motherboard and the hard drive. The damage caused could be extreme and expensive.
When the virus is first run, it patches the critical operating system file KERNEL32.DLL and stores it in the name of KRIZED.TT6. On the next startup it replaces original KERNEL32.DLL file with KRIZED.TT6. The variants of Kriz will use different name to patch KERNEL32.DLL. Then it become memory resident and infects all accessed Windows Portable Executable files.
The payload of W32/Kriz is stolen from deadly W95/CIH virus. The computer motherboards manufactured in the last few years store their BIOS on a flash ROM chip which are rewritable. W32/Kriz virus directly attacks the code stored in the flash ROM chip and makes the computer unbootable.

W32/FunLove is a Win32 PE file virus that will infect SCR, EXE, OCX files under Win9x and WinNT 4.0 platforms. The infected files will increase by 4099 bytes. What is notable about this virus is that it uses a new strategy to attack the Windows NT file security system and it runs as a service on Windows NT systems.
When the virus is first run, the virus drops a file called FLCSS.EXE into the SYSTEM folder. Then it will directly infect all EXE, SCR, and OCX files in the Program Files and WINDOWS/WINNT folders, including any subfolders. It infects network shared drives too.
