I know a lot of people were disappointed by the lack of a decent boot logo in Vista, so Ive thrown together a tool that should simplify the process of creating the new high resolution boot logos!
Your works of art need to be saved as 24-bit BMPs, and youll need to create them in two sizes: 800*600 and 1024*768. On my machine the boot logo always defaults to 1024*768, but I assume the 800*600 version automatically kicks in if your graphics card is rubbish Once you?ve selected your two images, just click File -> "Save Boot Screen File As..." and it will generate the logo file. To make the logo come up during boot, youll need to copy the file to the following folder: "windir"System32en-US
Youll also need to make sure the /NOGUIBOOT option is enabled in the MSCONFIG tool, otherwise youll only get the old 16 colour boot screen. For full details, make sure you read the info during setup.
IMPORTANT: Its still beta and there may be bugs so use at your own risk, and make sure you backup first!
Vista Boot Logo Generator doesnt yet support x64 Vista, in this version.. Do not attempt to install x86 boot screens on the 64-bit versions of Vista, otherwise you will cause your system to become unbootable!Vista boot logos are language specific. Some languages are not supported in this beta, and will be added in a future version.
By default, Vistas high resolution boot logo is NOT ENABLED. To enable the hi-res boot logo, you must enable the /NOGUIBOOT option using MSCONFIG (Start > msconfig.exe).
High-res Vista boot logos come in two different sizes: 800*600 and 1024*768. Both sizes are full 24-bit colour. To generate a valid boot logo file, you must supply BOTH sizes.This program currently only generates the boot logo file (winload.exe.mui). Once the "Give Vista Look" command is given, if your program name is "program.exe", a "program.exe.manifest" file is created and it sits belong your program. Just run your program to view the newly rounded and shaded controls.
Works under XP and Vista.
Requirements and cautions
Vista Look runs only with Windows Vista or XP. Changes in your program (or any third-party program installed on your computer) work only with these versions of Windows. User of older versions of Windows will view only the old look, the manifest file is just ignored.
The Vista Look program and programs modified by it, require commctl32 version 6.0, that is assumed to be provided with all version of Windows XP and Vista.
Vista Look should work with 32 bits and 64 bits versions of Windows.
Do not modify the content of the manifest file. When the file is recognized, a bad content will prevent the associated program to run. But you can delete it with no problem. If ever the program refuses to run, just delete the manifest file.

The program is free and distributed under the Mozilla 1.1 license.
You can use it and distribute it freely. Do not change the copyright header and all copyright notice with authors name displayed by the program and documentation.
You can include Vista Look along with you own programs, to allow your users beautify themselves your programs if they want, providing the license and copyright infos are unchanged. Actually, including the manifest file should be sufficient and without problem.

Each button and field on the screen has a popup window that describes its purpose, when the mouse stay up on it, and so understanding and using the interface is rather easy.
