You can plan your tracks by simple clicking on the map, or you can view track logs from the other people. You can check your tracks with on-line satellite or orthophoto maps e.g. Google maps.
You can manage points of intereset. Wherever you find something interesting e.g. water source, campsite, bivouac, geocache or mountain summit, you can store this places to appropriate categories by selecting place from map or grabbing it from GPS. In anytime later you can browse these points and look round its neighbourhood and it's possible to tell GPS to navigate to that place.
You can measure distance, velocity, azimuth and altitude. It's possible to view altitude profile of your trip.
It's possible to make smaller sub-map of bigger map or sub-map of some on-line map for offline using in your desktop computer or in your PDA for your nature adventure. You can create your own map by scanning some paper map and calibrating it with proper map datum and map projection to gps gets work correctly.
Even you can use map without calibration, however you can't use gps support on this map. But it is still possible use this map for example on your trips from notebook or PDA, or you can print this map on the printer.

With Wissenbach Map3D you will be able to create, view and edit GPX (GPs eXchange) files. A GPX file contains trails, routes, and waypoints.
All of the objects produced by a non-mapping GPS unit such as the Garmin eTrex summit. A GPX file can be created by reading data from your GPS receiver with this program, or by drawing on this program over a background topographic map. This program will also write GPX tracks, waypoints, or routes to your Garmin receiver, to allow you to follow trails which others have previously logged with their GPS receivers.
The background maps for the program are the familiar USGS 7 1/2 minute topographic maps, converted by the United States Government with your tax money to Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) files. This program does not directly open DRG files but instead uses the DRG files as a background resource.
When you define a region of interest by opening a GPX file, by downloading data from the GPS receiver, or by using View->Enter Coordinates to manually specify a location, the program attempts to draw a background topographic map by looking on your computer for USGS DRG files. Any GPS data, either read from a GPX file or from your GPS receiver, is then overlayed on top of the background maps.
WM3D auto-downloads and displays topographic maps and aerial photos from TerraServer USA. Another program which operates in this manner is Expert GPS. (Expert GPS was the first program to automatically download Terraserver tiles in this manner, as far as I know.)
Wissenbach Map3D initially opens with a blank screen, because the geographic extent desired is unknown. To start, either connect a Garmin Receiver to the serial port and use GPS, Read From GPS, or View, Enter Coordinates. A good way to find starting coordinates for planning a hike or bike or ski trip is to use the USGS Geographic Names Information System search form United States and Territories.
If you are interested in terrain visualization but this program doesnt meet your expectations, see Terrain Visualization for programs with similar capabilities.

GreatCirc is a software that lets you calculate great circle distances on the earths surface, and also plotting points or great circle paths from a world map.
The "great circle path" is the shortest direct route between two points on the earths surface. Because the earth is a globe, the shortest path between any two points lies on a circle which is centred at the earths core and passes around the surface of the world. Such a path will appear to be a curved line when drawn on a flat world map beause of the distortion inherent in mapping the globe onto a flat map. See the Wikipedia article for further information on great circle distance.
GreatCirc will calculate both the common "Direct Problem" and the "Inverse Problem", as well as doing a separate "Coverage Area" calculation. For the Direct Problem, given a starting point and the initial bearing and distance it will calculate the latitude and longitude at the destination.
For the Inverse problem, it will calculate the distance and azimuth bearings between any two points, given the latitude and longitude. In both cases, GreatCirc will plot the resulting Great Circle path on a world map.
GreatCirc will also do a coverage area calculation, given a centre point and a range, it will plot the resulting circle on a world map and calculate the area of the earths surface enclosed within the circle.
Great Circle calculations are based on spherical geometry, and can be relatively simple if the earth is assumed to be a perfect sphere. However, the earth is known to be in fact a flattened ellipsoid and not a sphere at all.
GreatCirc uses the standard WGS84 ellipsoid earth model commonly found on GPS receivers, to provide the most accurate calculations, however the option to do calculations using a spherical earth model is also available to allow comparisons between the two techniques. To perform the WGS84 ellipsoid calculations, GreatCirc uses the Vincenty algorithm.
A batch mode is also available to allow calculation of multiple distances and waypoints along a path and plot them on the world map.
GreatCirc may be of interest to mapping professionals interested in finding true distances between locations on the earths surface, or the general public interested in plotting their travels on a world map
