Windows Media Services 9 series for Windows Server 2003 is an industrial-strength platform for streaming live or on-demand audio and video content over the Internet or an intranet. Use Windows Media Services to configure and manage one or more Windows Media servers that deliver your content to clients.
Windows Media Services 2008 for Windows Server 2008 is an optional supplement to Windows Server 2008. In Windows Server 2008, the Streaming Media Services role (which includes the latest version of Windows Media Services) and remote administration tools are not included in Server Manager. To obtain the new features and tools available in Windows Media Services for Windows Server 2008, such as the built-in WMS Cache/Proxy plug-in, you must obtain and run the appropriate Streaming Media Services role installer file on the updated platform.
These Microsoft Update Standalone Package (MSU) files install either 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) versions (as noted in the file names) of:
- Windows Media Services and the rest of the Streaming Media Services role in Server Manager, on "full" installations of Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2008
- The Streaming Media Services Server Core role, on "Server Core" installations of Standard and Enterprise editions of Windows Server 2008
- The Windows Media Services snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC) on a computer that is running the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition of the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system

That said, users interested solely in music playback will likely find little reason to abandon iTunes. And iPod users will simply ignore WMP 10 as they have previous versions.

That decision will be controversial, but I think its the right one: With over 300 million users, XP is clearly the preferred Windows client for consumers and music enthusiasts: Had Microsoft shipped a WMP 10 version for older Windows versions, that product would have lacked key features and held up the release of the XP version.

Windows Media Encoder is used to convert digital content into Windows Media Format for distribution by Windows Media Services in Windows NT and Windows 2000 Server. If a request with a particular malformation were sent to an affected encoder, it could cause it to fail, thereby denying formatted content to the Windows Media Server.
Major Features:
- Would primarily affect streaming media providers that supply real-time broadcasts of streaming media it would not prevent a Windows Media Server from distributing already-encoded data.
- Cannot be used to cause a machine to crash, nor can it be used to usurp any administrative privileges.
- Simply locating the server could be a challenge, because the IP address of the Windows Media Encoder would typically not be advertised.
- This patch will fix the problem.
