Windows server "Longhorn" Technologies
More Control
Maintaining control of the servers on a networkand, more importantly, access to the servers on a networkis a fundamental priority for network administrators. To this end, windows server "Longhorn" contains two new areas of functionality to help administrators extend and maximize their control over access to network servers: Network Access Protection and Internet Information Services 7.0.
Server Manager: A new feature that is included in windows server "Longhorn." It is a "one-stop-shop" designed to guide Information Technology administrators through the end-to-end process of installing, configuring, and managing server roles and features that are part of windows server "Longhorn." server Manager replaces and consolidates a number of features from Microsoft windows server 2003 such as Manage Your Server, Configure Your Server, and Add or Remove windows Components. You can use server Manager to configure various "roles" and "features" on your machine.
Windows PowerShell: A new command-line shell with over 130 tools and an integrated scripting language. It enables administrator to more easily control and securely automate routine system administration tasks, especially across multiple servers. windows PowerShell does not require you to migrate your existing scripts, and it is ideally suited for automation of new windows server "Longhorn" features. A new admin-focused scripting language, and consistent syntax and utilities, windows PowerShell accelerates automation of system administration taskssuch as Active Directory, Terminal Server, and Internet Information server (IIS) 7.0and improves your organizations ability to address the unique system management problems of your environment.
windows PowerShell is easy to adopt, learn, and use, because it does not require a background in programming, and it works with your existing IT infrastructure, existing scripts, and existing command-line tools.
Internet Information Services 7.0: windows server "Longhorn" delivers a unified platform for Web publishing that integrates Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, ASP.NET, windows Communication Foundation, windows Workflow Foundation, and windows SharePoint Services 3.0. IIS 7.0 is a major enhancement to the existing windows Web server and plays a central role in integrating Web platform technologies. IIS 7.0 helps developers and administrators alike maximize their control over network/Internet interfaces through key functionality pillars that include delegated administration, enhanced security and a reduced attack surface area, integrated application and health management for Web services, and improved administration tools.
Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC): A new type of domain controller configuration in the windows server "Longhorn" operating system that makes it possible for organizations to easily deploy a domain controller in locations where the physical security of a domain controller cannot be guaranteed. An RODC hosts a read-only replica of the Active Directory directory services database for a given domain. Prior to this release, users who had to authenticate with a domain controller, but were in a branch office that could not provide adequate physical security for a domain controller, had to authenticate over a wide area network (WAN). In many cases, this was not an efficient solution. By placing a read-only Active Directory database replica closer to branch users, these users can benefit from faster logon times and more efficient access to authentication resources on the network, even in environments with inadequate physical security to deploy a traditional domain controller.
Greater Flexibility
As business needs change, so do the demands that organizations place on their servers. At the same time, advances in the capabilities of server technology change the ways in which organizations and end users utilize them. windows server "Longhorn" is designed so that you can modify your infrastructure to adapt to the changing needs of the business and still remain agile. For organizations that need domain controllers in physically less secure locations or strictly for use with line-of-business applications, windows server "Longhorn" offers a new configuration option: the Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC). For organizations that have remote users, windows server "Longhorn" adds exciting improvements and innovations to Terminal Services that facilitate seamless integration of remote and local applications on client computers, access to these same remote programs via Web browser, and a means to access remote terminals and applications across firewalls. For organizations that need to roll out several servers and PCs at the same time, windows Deployment Services helps to quickly and easily deploy new computers to the network using image-based deployments.
Server Core: Beginning with the Beta 2 release of windows server "Longhorn," administrators can choose to install windows server with only the services required to perform the DHCP, DNS, file server, or domain controller roles. This new installation option will not install non-essential services and applications and will provide base server functionality without any extra overhead. While the server Core installation option is a fully functioning mode of the operating system supporting one of the designate roles, it does not include the server graphic user interface (GUI). Because server Core installations include only what is required for the designated roles, a server Core installation will typically require less maintenance and fewer updates as there are fewer components to manage. In other words, since there are fewer programs and components installed and running on the server, there are fewer attack vectors exposed to the network, resulting in a reduced attack surface. If a security flaw or vulnerability is discovered in a component that is not installed, a patch is not required.
Terminal Services: windows server "Longhorn" introduces new functionality in Terminal Services to connect to remote computers and applications. Terminal Services Remote Programs completely integrates applications running on a remote terminal with users desktops such that they behave as if they were running on an individual users local computer; users can run programs from a remote location side-by-side with their local programs. Terminal Services Web Access permits this same flexibility of remote application access via Web browser, granting an even wider variety of ways user can access and use programs running on remote terminals. And Terminal Services Gateway allows user to access remote terminals and remote terminal programs in a firewall-friendly manner.
Windows Deployment Services (WDS): An updated and redesigned windows server "Longhorn" version of Remote Installation Services (RIS), WDS assists with the rapid adoption and deployment of image-based windows operating systems. WDS allows network-based installation of windows Vista and windows server "Longhorn" to "bare metal" computers (no operating system installed), and even supports mixed environments including Microsoft windows XP and Microsoft windows server 2003. windows Deployment Services thus provides an end-to-end solution for deployment of windows operating systems to client and server computers and reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) and complexity of windows server "Longhorn" and windows Vista deployments.
Increased Protection
Network Access Protection (NAP): A new framework that allows an IT administrator to define health requirements for the network and to restrict computers that do not meet these requirements from communicating with the network. NAP enforces administrator-defined policies that describe the health requirements for the given organization. For example, health requirements may be defined to include all updates to the operating system be installed, or having antivirus or antispyware software installed and updated. In this way, network administrators can define the baseline level of protection all computers carry when connecting to the network.
Microsoft BitLocker provides additional security for your data through full volume encryption on multiple drives, even when the system is in unauthorized hands or running a different operating system time, data, and control.
Failover Clustering: Improvements are aimed to makes it easier to configure server clusters while providing protection and availability of your data and applications. By using the new Validate Tool in failover clusters, you can perform tests to determine whether your system, storage, and network configuration is suitable for a cluster. With failover clusters in windows server "Longhorn," administrators can carry out setup and migration tasks, as well as management and operations tasks more easily. Improvements to the cluster infrastructure help administrators maximize availability of the services they provide to users, achieve better storage and network performance and improve security.

The Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows Servers enterprise edition application was designed to protect data on servers running under the Microsoft windows family of operating systems (including x64 versions) from all types of malicious programs.
Features of "Kaspersky Anti Virus for windows server enterprise Edition":
Effective protection from malicious programs
· Real-time antivirus protection. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for windows Servers enterprise edition scans all files that are launched, opened and/or modified and disinfects or deletes all infected files. Furthermore, suspicious files and content are isolated in a quarantine area prior to undergoing further analysis.
· On-demand scanning. The application scans specified areas of the file system according to a schedule or upon demand from the system administrator.
· Scanning of critical system areas. The application can scan those areas of the operating system that are more susceptible to infection as a separate task. For example, scanning startup objects helps prevent malicious code from launching during system startup and detects hidden processes. The most susceptible areas include startup objects and objects in RAM.
· Prevention of virus epidemics. The application records any virus attacks, which helps the system administrator react promptly by launching a scan, updating the antivirus database or switching to an increased level of security.
· Isolating infected computers. If a workstation on the network becomes infected, the application blocks the user from accessing server resources for a certain amount of time. During this period, the administrator can identify the source of infection and treat the infection.
· System recovery after infection. After a malicious program is detected and deleted, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows Servers enterprise edition also deletes all of the records created by the malicious program in system files or the system registry. This prevents any possible malfunctions in the operating system.
High Performance
· Scalability. On multiprocessor servers, system administrators can define the number of copies of the antivirus engine they would like to run simultaneously in order to accelerate the processing of server requests.
· Load balancing. The application allows administrators to regulate the allocation of server resources between the antivirus solution and other applications depending upon task priority levels; antivirus scans can continue in background mode.
· Optimized scanning. The iSwift and iChecker technologies make Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows Servers enterprise edition complete tasks noticeably faster: the program performs a complete scan of the system during the first on-demand scan, while subsequent scans will only check new and/or modified files.
· Selection of trusted processes. The system administrator may exclude safe processes from scans, especially if they may be slowed down by an antivirus scan (e.g., backup copying, hard drive defragmentation, etc.)
Flexible Administration
· Centralized installation and control. Kaspersky Administration Kit a centralized administration tool can be used to install applications and change settings remotely for several servers at once and to control the application after installation.
· Flexible administration options. Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows Servers enterprise edition can be managed via the Microsoft Management Console (including remote administration), Kaspersky Administration Kit, or using the command line.
· Database updates. Updating antivirus databases can be carried out on demand or automatically based on a schedule via Kaspersky Lab servers on the Internet or via local servers. The application automatically selects the least loaded update server.
· Flexible time settings for virus scans. In order to optimize the use of server resources and maximize the convenience of users, the system administrator can assign the exact time for an antivirus scan to begin and end, which makes it easy to schedule on-demand scans during times when corporate servers are not overloaded such as at night or on the weekend.
· Reporting system. The system administrator can control the application using reports and by reviewing the Microsoft windows or Kaspersky Administration Kit event logs. The reporting system features a search function and a filter, which makes it easy to find the information needed in large logs.
· Information about the applications status. The application comes with an extensive list of events of which the administrator can be notified via NetSendor via email, with support for the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM).
· Optimization for Intel Xeon (Only available with windows server enterprise Edition). Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows server enterprise edition is optimized for multi-processor servers based on the Intel Xeon technology. The applications scalability and high performance make it an optimal choice in high load environments.
