This can be quite useful if you want to automatically shut down Windows at some future point, say at the end of a batch file. This program shuts down windows but gives you a grace period to cancel it.
I use it when I want to rip a DVD movie overnight and dont need my computer running all night when the rip has finished. If you run it with no parameters the grace period is 60 seconds, but you can pass any number of seconds on the command line, e.g. shutdownwindows 300, or you can configure the default in the file "shutdownwindows.conf" (you can also configure a total shutdown or just a reboot).
Full Delphi source code is provided.

Shutdown Detector is a program to detect when the computer is shutting down and allow you the opportunity to prevent it from doing so. You can access settings and other features by right-clicking on the programs icon in the system tray (this area is usually at the bottom right of the screen). The program can be password protected so the computer wont shut down without the password. Notes: When you prevent a shut down under Windows Vista (R) you may see the message "this program is preventing Windows from shutting down". Simply respond to the message accordingly. The Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement addresses shutdown issues on systems with specific hardware/software configurations running Windows 98 Second Edition. These issues include systems restarting when selecting shutdown and systems hanging on shutdown.
NOTE: This supplement has been updated as of November, 1999. Please install this latest version.
Microsoft recommends the troubleshooting steps outlined in the KB article How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems. If, after following the steps outlined in this article, the system continues to exhibit shutdown problems, then Microsoft suggests applying this update.
Microsoft has also learned that some customers were replacing the Windows 98 Second Edition version of CONFIGMG.VXD with the Windows 98 version to address shutdown issues. Microsoft strongly recommends that users do not do this. This is an untested scenario that could result in blue screens, ACPI errors and hardware failures. This update will check to see if the appropriate version of CONFIGMG.VXD is installed on the system and replace any older versions with the Windows 98 Second Edition version.

I found that after using Windows for a long time in one session it would not shut down properly and hung the machine, even after applying Microsofts fix for this problem. I also found that if I restarted instead of shutting down it ever hung the machine, allowing me then to shut down properly when it came back up, avoiding having to run a ScanDisk.
