iStat wireless is a free and simple Widget that will monitor wireless network strength with a striking design and two different views.

Switching between the simple and advanced views is merely a matter of clicking on the dials centre.

Wireless AutoSwitch runs as a service and will automatically disable your wireless card when you connect to a LAN (hard wire) connection, and re-enable the wireless card when there is no LAN connection.

This ensures that you are always using the fastest connection for network traffic. In the office this helps reduce redundant network connections, while still helping your employees seamlessly transfer from wired to wireless network connections.

For offices that are wireless security conscious this application makes sure the laptops wireless card is off when the user is wired into your network.

Secure Messaging is a Web-based, alternative mail system for sending and receiving messages.

Use secure messaging to send and receive messages from a alternative web-based mail system. Using the secure messaging system no actual mail is transmitted through any 3rd party servers.

Only an optional message notice is sent to the recepient, the user needs to visit the site in order to read the message.

Normal SMTP mail can hit multiple servers and can possibly be read, stored, or changed anywhere within the process.

Setup secure messaging on an SSL enabled website to enhance the privacy even more.

The Linux Wireless Extension and the Wireless Tools are an Open Source project sponsored by Hewlett Packard (through my contribution) since 1996, and build with the contribution of many Linux users all over the world.

The Wireless Extension (WE) is a generic API allowing a driver to expose to the user space configuration and statistics specific to common Wireless LANs. The beauty of it is that a single set of tool can support all the variations of Wireless LANs, regardless of their type (as long as the driver support Wireless Extension).

Another advantage is these parameters may be changed on the fly without restarting the driver (or Linux).

The Wireless Tools (WT) is a set of tools allowing to manipulate the Wireless Extensions. They use a textual interface and are rather crude, but aim to support the full Wireless Extension. There are many other tools you can use with Wireless Extensions, however Wireless Tools is the reference implementation.

iwspy allow to get per node link quality
iwpriv allow to manipulate the Wireless Extensions specific to a driver (private)

Most Linux distributions also have integrated Wireless Extensions support in their networking initialisation scripts, for easier boot-time configuration of wireless interfaces. They also include Wireless Tools as part of their standard packages.
Wireless configuration can also be done using the Hotplug scripts and distribution specific support, this enable the proper support of any removable wireless interface (Pcmcia, CardBus, USB...).

Any versions of the Pcmcia package offer the possibility to do wireless configuration of Pcmcia and Cardbus card through thefile wireless.opts. This allow to fully integrate wireless settings in the Pcmcia scheme mechansism. However, this method is now deprecated in favor of distribution specific methods.

Please note that the Wireless Tools (starting with version 19) supports fully IEEE 802.11 parameters and devices, support older style of devices and most proprietary protocols, and are prepared to handle HiperLan as well. More recent versions of course adds more 802.11 support.

But, unfortunately not all drivers support all these features...

XPA Messaging provides seamless communication between Unix programs, including X, Tcl/Tk, and generic select() loops. XPA Messaging provides an easy way for users to communicate with these XPA-enabled programs by executing XPA client commands from a shell.

Because XPA works both at the programming level and the shell level, it is a powerful tool for unifying any environment, offering flexibility in choosing the best level at which to access XPA services.

A program becomes an XPA-enabled server by defining named points of public access through which data and commands can be exchanged with other client programs (and users). Using standard TCP sockets, XPA supports both single-point and broadcast messaging to and from these servers.
