Opens the specified file and uses a set of rules to try to identify WHATIS is a small, simple and easy-to-use commandline program to look at files and determine what kind of file they are (ZIP, GIF, WORD, EXE, etc). This is handy when the original filenames have been lost, as after a hard drive crash or especially when downloading files from CompuServe in non-HMI mode.
WHATIS opens the specified file and uses a set of rules to try to identify
the file. For example, Microsoft EXE files have "MZ" as the first two
bytes. WordPerfect files have "WPC" in the first four bytes. GIF files have
"GIF" in the first three bytes.
If these rules fail to determine the file type, WHATIS scans the first 16 Kbytes of the file looking for non-ASCII characters. If none are found, it uses another set of rules for text files looking for a match. If the file contains non-ASCII characters, it uses rules to guess if the file might be a compressed file or executable code.
