Freeware Windows sequential file and directory copier Powercopy uses a large RAM buffer to sequentialize the copy process: first it reads as many files as it can up to the size of the buffer, and then it writes them.
While useless if you need to copy from one device from another, if you need to make some large copies from/to the same physical device the gain is immense.
There are many advantages in using Pcopy instead of Windows integrated copy command or DOS copy/xcopy:
- More than 3 times the speed: around 300MB per minute read+write with an average HD.
- No HD head whirring (HD seems still), no HD wear.
- Safer: you can copy the content of a folder into its subfolder. This is possible because Pcopy will take a snapshot of the situation before starting so you dont risk to fill your HD recursively. Also automatically checks for self-overwritings (source files going to overwrite other source files)
Actually the real fault is of the Windows copying methods: they use only a very very small buffer (around 512 bytes) which forces the hard disk head to make an enormous number of movements ahead and backwards.
This slows down the copy process enormously and heaviliy wears the hard disk. So in case you need to copy partitions around the HD or if you work with large audio or video files this program is a must.
Furthermore:
- Good feedback while working.
- Supports directories drag and drop for specifying source/destination paths so its quite confortable to use.
- Both Windows interface and command line use.

Because XCOPY was too slow for my needs and was lacking a compare/verify feature, so I decided to write my own utility. Besides being a good JAVA exercise, I knew I would use it every day, and I do use it everyday: I use it to backup my development computer to a memory stick.
Here is a short summary of what dirdup does:
Copies directories
Exclude list allows you to exclude specified files from copying
Quick Copy Mode: checks the files dates/size before making the decision to copy -- this can save a lot of time when backing up to a slow-write device, such as flash memory sticks
Full Copy Mode: compares all of the files in the destination and source directories - even if the size and dates match, DirDup does a byte-by-byte comparison to detect data deterioration
Validates source files before they are copied - ensures that a good backup file isnt overwritten by an incomplete or damaged source file
Displays copied files, file statistics, and (most importantly) any errors in the log window
You can run any task automatically, just pass it as the argument to dirdup. You can easily create a shortcut for your backup task.<<less

ySync 1.1.30
ySync is a backup tool which will synchronise folders for Windows all platforms. more>> Primarily its a backup tool which will synchronise folders. It also has a command line interface and will use variables in the destination folder name to generate regular sets of backups. (See the examples in the help file included with the software.)
You can use the ySync user interface to pick source and destination folders, then click the Copy or Sync button. If you click Copy all new and changed files and folders will be copied into the destination folder. If you choose Sync the program will do another pass afterwards to remove stale files - those which are no longer present in the source folder. Using Sync, you will end up with an exact duplicate of the source folder. (If you dont know why thats a desirable feature, you dont need ySync - just use XCopy.)
ySync is even more useful as a command line tool. You can specify destination folders using variables (e.g. %DAY% for the day of the week, %YEAR% for the year), allowing you to keep incremental backups. For example, I have a system task which backs up My Documents to a series of folders MON through SUN, giving me seven complete snapshots. If I want to back track to an older file, I simply go back through the folders until I find an earlier version. I also burn the folders to DVD from time to time, giving me a complete weekly snapshot.<<less
